So, what's in YOUR Frunk?
As pick up lines go this one could bomb…unless you’re at a Tesla Supercharger or road rally where everyone knows about one of the more revered features of a Tesla, which is the storage space under the hood (that’s bonnet to my British friends). Tesla calls it the front trunk, but owners just refer to it as the “frunk” (Gotta love a good portmanteau).
The frunk is not as easily accessed as the rear trunk. There’s no exterior handle or button. You have to open it from the touchscreen or use the mobile app. This is a bit inconvenient and is probably the reason it doesn’t get more use except at . . . Halloween? Or to display puppies (see Earl Of Frunkpuppy on Twitter).

For most Model 3 owners, the dividing line between stowing in the trunk verses the frunk seems to center on accessibility. It’s not only a bit more work to open the frunk, it also requires two hands to close it properly. There are, of course ways around this – some relatively inexpensive and other, more expensive. Most of us, though will probably just end up storing things in the frunk that we don’t often need to access.

In our family, we use the rear trunk for most things, including groceries and goods we’re carrying to and from events. The sub-trunk (that space below the trap door in your rear trunk) is where we stash the tire chains, the roadside emergency kit (first aid, solar blanket, bottled water, etc) and the tire repair kit. The frunk is where, we stash light jackets, ponchos and towels in case we’re caught unprepared for changing weather, but that’s about it.

Lately, though I’ve seen some really cool accessories that have me rethinking my casual neglect of this space. For instance, there are some nifty organizers in both the hard and soft variety that make it easier to use this space for everything from small grocery runs to picnic supplies. There’s even luggage made specifically to fit the frunk and how cool is that for those of us who love going on road trips. If you’re going to the beach or a sporting event and want to throw a tailgate party? There are drink coolers that fit nearly perfectly. Again, you can choose from an inexpensive, plastic Coleman or opt for something a bit more polished.

Gym rats who just want to throw a gym bag in there can get a fun bag that looks like a battery pack. It will attract attention when you open the hood and bonus, it keeps the funk of your workout clothes out of the car. If you’re the outdoors type and frequently have a soaked wetsuit or muddy hiking boots that you don’t want dirtying the trunk area, there are some pretty nice all-weather frunk inserts that will keep your mats dry and clean.
Our advice is to flaunt that frunk which most cars don’t have! It’s more than just bonus storage space. It’s impressive when people see you storing groceries or sporting goods where they assume your engine should be. It’s a conversation starter to roll up to a tailgater or car show and open the hood to offer an assortment of snacks and drinks. The Frunk is more secure, since it can’t be accessed from inside the car, even if a thief breaks a window. And it doesn’t share air space with the cabin like the rear trunk does, so food and other smells stay out of your car. In other words, keep the funk in the frunk.
As other EVs join in getting Frunky, just remember Tesla started it!
